ABOUT CHIKUNGUNYA VIRUS (CHIKV)
- The name “chikungunya” comes from a word in the African Kimakonde language meaning “to become contorted ”.6
- Chikungunya is caused by the chikungunya virus, an RNA virus in the alphavirus genus of the family Togaviridae.6
- The virus was first identified in Tanzania in 1952.6
- CHIKV is the most well-known member of the family of arthritogenic alphaviruses.7
