Joint pain and high fever are hallmarks of this mosquito-borne disease9
In symptomatic patients, the incubation period is typically 3–7 days (range 1–12 days) after the bite of an infected mosquito.9
Symptoms may include9:
Fever
Severe joint pain (lasting for a few days and up to weeks, months or years)
Joint swelling
Muscle pain
Headache
Nausea
Fatigue
Rash
Conjunctivitis
Joint symptoms are typically severe, can be debilitating, and usually involve multiple joints, typically bilateral and symmetric.9
Given that the symptoms of chikungunya are non-specific and overlap with other infections, diagnosis can be difficult.6
